While ruminating on my career prospects last night, I found an article with some real hot takes in it. Paraphrasing here…
“SRE is like the evolution of ops into the corporate structure of the next generation. Ops stops being its own group that slows innovation to its own pace and becomes a product team like any other, only the product is the infrastructure. If they don’t deliver their product on timetable, other teams can move on without them.
Traditional ops is dead, sysadmins have 5 years to move to product teams like SRE”
I… think it’s alarmist but it raises worries for a “traditional” sysadmin who just wants to be a server monkey like myself :Z
Also I’d love to see how one proposes a company move on and just leave its ops team behind. The results have, traditionally, been bedlam.
